Fresh air and sunshine

We are still in San Antonio.  We leave for the land on Friday, and to be honest... it cannot come soon enough. This isn't going to be a rant post... so don't worry... but I am so ready to be out of the city.   The hustle and bustle... it is starting to really wear on me.  And I miss sunsets...   we drove down the road to have dinner in Helotes last night and I got to see one. 

Growing up in the panhandle of Texas I got used to sunsets... my mom always called them "heaven colors..." to pretty to be earthly.  But since moving down to San Antonio I don't get to see too many. Being in the hills, it seems to go from light to dark instantly... no sunset.  

But for the next couple of days... we are here... and I must make the most of them. We still have co tractors working on the shower... the new stove was delivered today and we are almost 100% packed. New haircuts for me and the kiddos tonight and we should be ready to go!  

Since I am trying to make the most of the remaining moments of city life I decided to bring the ducklings out to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. It is their first time seeing the sun or feeling the grass. So far, both are a big hit!

I might have to bring them out tomorrow too... just don't tell the HOA!

Happy Two Month Birthday, Fiona!

Our little Fiona is now 2 months old!

She is always into something. Her favorite pastimes include climbing into her feeder box, breaking out of her hutch and long cuddles while watching the Golden Girls. She is also growing to enjoy her grooming times but still greatly dislikes nail trim day. She is our little diva.

My question is... how do people get these fabulous photos of their bunnies?? I can never get Fiona to sit still long enough to snap a decent pic... she is always so curious and on the go.

My little lame duck

In a moment of weakness, we took home some ducklings. One of these duckling had a lame foot.  Since I try my hardest with the lives I have been entrusted, I took to the internet to find a solution to my little curly toe.  

After asking on a couple of Facebook groups, I decided the best course of action was to offer swim therapy 2 times a day...

To make a little "shoe" and spread out the webbing...

And to add niacin to the water.  Ducks apparently need niacin (NOT the flush free kind as this is a different form). A lack of it can cause foot and leg defects... you can either add niacin to the water (a super diluted form) or mix human grade brewers yeast in with the food. Since I couldn't find brewers yeast, I went the water route.

24 hours later and my little ducky is doing great! She is bearing weight on her foot and can walk! She does have a slight limp, and prefers sitting to standing, but I am thinking that will correct itself with use.

I am still going to do swim therapy daily with her just to keep her leg growing strong... but I have hope she will lead a full and normal life.

A moment of weakness

We want to Tractor Supply to look at temporary cooping options (more on that later) and a gentleman was showing my kiddos the ducklings...  He showed them that one tiny duckling had a lame foot.  Well... that was all it took.  

We are currently one week out from moving to the land, but still very much in the middle of the city... and we are now the proud owners of 4 ducks.  3 perfectly healthy ducklings and one with a curled under leg...

They are living under a heat lamp, in a Rubbermaid tote, in my carpeted upstairs closet.  Packages of pine shavings and chick starter are holding the place that is supposed to occupy shoes.

I'm not sure how we are going to manage moving 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 dogs, 7 fish, 1 angora bunny and 4 ducklings, five hours down the road... but we will manage. And it will be awesome!

Our little bun refused to have her pic taken this morning... she is such a diva.

Our first Angora!

I have been on a waiting list for an angora rabbit for a few months now and a couple of weeks ago, I finally got the notification that a litter was going to be ready to go home soon. The timing was awful... with the house going on the market... a big move ahead... but I wasn't going to lose my chance! So last weekend, we brought home an 8 week old REW angora rabbit!

Her name is still up in the air... the kids like Sabrina, but I just keep calling her Bun Bun. So we shall see what sticks!

She is so sweet and gentle... and chil! I expected her to be active, but she is content to just be. I have read that turning them on their back puts them into a trance, but she does this on her own. She is a back sleeper... little weirdo.  This makes me glad though... it will make grooming her that much easier.

Her hair/wool/fiber is so amazingly soft and light! I was expecting it to be more like a dogs undercoat, but it is not. My son calls her a cloud.  I am so looking forward to harvesting her fiber! It should be so dreamy!

We are currently looking for a buck to add soon. Once October hits, we might try for a litter of our own!  

Getting ready...

Our San Antonio home is getting ready to hit the market! We are ready to be in the new home...

While the contractors are doing their thing (popcorn ceiling removal - who thought that texture was a good idea??) we thought we should hit the road.  While driving outside of Dallas, we found a homestead market. They sold various cheeses, soaps and farm stuff. Since we have never been the kind to say no to cheese, we stopped.  And there... in the middle of it all... was the brooder. Chicks chirping happily... just waiting for their homes.  It took every once of will power I had to leave those chicks... 

I just keep telling myself... soon, Ginger... soon...
